Foreword
Ever since the Internet became a freely accessible public forum, technological advances in the communications field have been increasing at breakneck speed. Social media are no exception: new blogs, forums, wikis and social networking sites with specific features and purposes are emerging on a regular basis.
Social media are revolutionizing communications. They are excellent tools that allow information to be shared quickly with many people at the same time. What is more, content is disseminated in real time, and everyone can access it instantaneously. These tools are also multi-functional: they can be used both at work and at home.
The possibilities presented by social media are endless, and they can be exploited in a thousand and one ways. For example, the Government of Canada increasingly uses social media to communicate with Canadians and to increase its visibility on the Web. In addition, it has set up wikis such as GCpedia that promote collaboration and teamwork across departmental and geographical boundaries.
The Translation Bureau, which has the mandate to standardize and disseminate terminology within the federal public service, is proud to present the Social Media Glossary. This new Terminology Bulletin will be an invaluable tool for all who work in the communications field, and especially for those who use social media.

Introduction
The Social Media Glossary aims to propose a common terminology in both English and French for all federal public servants, in order to facilitate communication between the Government of Canada and Canadians.
The glossary contains some 300 bilingual entries that reflect the most frequently used terms in social media. Many of the entries are accompanied by definitions and explanatory notes. A multitude of phraseology is also included to provide users with examples of term usage.
The development of the glossary started with building a corpus of unilingual and bilingual sources: Canadian government websites, specialized reference books, magazine and newspaper articles, social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Twitter and YouTube) and wikis (e.g. GCpedia, Wikipedia). The sources were then scanned to extract general social media terms as well as terms specific to the most used platforms.
Choosing the terms and synonyms and establishing the French equivalents proved to be very challenging in light of the different terms used from one platform to another.
Given the magnitude of the social media field and the fact that technology is always evolving, it goes without saying that this glossary includes only a portion of the terminology used in this field at a specific point in time.

User's Guide
To streamline the glossary and facilitate its use, the following rules have been observed:
Entries are classified in strict alphabetical order.
Grammatical labels (for example, n., v., adj. and in French, n.m., n.f., n.é.) refer to the terminology unit in its entirety.
Grammatical labels indicating number are not included when the terms are given in the singular or plural form in both languages.
The phraseology applies to all the terms of an entry.
