Nunavut Arctic College, Nunatta Campus (Iqaluit, Nunavut)

This glossary is one of a series produced by the Interpreter/Translator Program at Nunavut Arctic College, Nunatta Campus. It contains a trilingual series of common legal terms, with definitions in plain English, which will be a useful tool for interpreter/translators working in the field.

At the end of this publication is a list of Inuit concepts and notions regarding the Canadian justice system. We hope this appendix, compiled by Dr. Michele Therrien et al., will be helpful to both interpreters and translators, as well as to those working within the justice system.

Much of the Inuktitut terminology contained in this glossary was originally compiled by the Legal Interpreting Program at the Department of Justice in Yellowknife under the direction of Betty Harnum and Mary Pepper. Through their hard work and the work of the many students who have attended the legal modules at the College, this glossary has been made possible. Thanks are also due to Francis Piugattuk for proofreading the Inuktitut terminology, to Pierre Rousseau for providing the French translation, and to Kelly Gallagher-McKay for reviewing and correcting non-criminal law definitions, and Claire Gigantes for editing the English definitions.
