ISO Technical Committee 37 has produced standards to facilitate the exchange of terminological data among databases. ISO 12620, "Data Categories", lists the data category names that should be used to identify the different pieces of information commonly found in terminology records. This way, no one data structure needs to be adopted for all terminology databases; instead, data elements in a particular database are mapped to the standardized data categories when terminology records are being exchanged with another database. ISO 12200, "Computer applications in terminology — Machine-readable terminology interchange format (MARTIF) - Negotiated interchange", provides one interchange format, while ISO/DIS 16642, "Terminological Markup Framework" defines a meta-model, or abstract conceptual data model to facilitate the exchange of terminological data.
Within LISA is the LISA/OSCAR standards group that came up with an exchange standard format for terminological data (TBX) and a translation memory exchange standard (TMX). Using these standards helps with sharing and re-use of terminology and translation resources that can be used as research tools for terminologists.
"TBX is an open XML-based standard format for terminological data. This standard provides a number of benefits so long as TBX files can be imported into and exported from most software packages that include a terminological database. This capability will greatly facilitate the flow of terminological information throughout the information cycle both inside an organization and with outside service providers. In addition, terminology that is made available to the general public will become much more accessible to humans and more easily integrated into existing terminological resources." This is the xml terminology markup format proposed by the LISA/OSCAR standards group as a standard for the localization industry.
"TMX is a vendor-neutral, open standard for storing and exchanging translation memories created by Computer Aided Translation (CAT) and localization tools. The purpose of TMX is to allow easier exchange of translation memory data between tools and/or translation vendors with little or no loss of critical data during the process. TMX is the result of an initiative undertaken by the OSCAR (Open Standards for Container/Content Allowing Re-use) committee, a LISA Special Interest Group."
