O Inselhotel Konstanz 1 não poderia ter nome mais adequado. Situado numa pequena ilha particular, o "hotel-ilha" de um lado se projeta no vasto espelho de água do Bodensee, e do outro se liga por uma ponte às torres protetoras da histórica cidade de Constança. Mas o mais exclusivo hotel da região também é uma ilha no tempo. Erguido por frades dominicanos a partir de 1236, o antigo monastério guarda tesouros da história da arte. É fácil se perder, a caminho do café da manhã, no grande claustro, admirando a profusão de afrescos dramáticos. Ali, entre aquelas mesmas abóbadas góticas nasceu em 1838 Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, e isso deve fazer você lembrar do seu encontro marcado com o grande sonho do ilustre conde: sair voando em um "balão de ar dirigível".

The Inselhotel Konstanz 1 could not have a more appropriate name. Located on a small private island, on the one hand, the "island-hotel" points out into the vast "reflecting pool" of the Bodensee, and on the other, it is connected by a bridge to the protecting towers of the historic city of Konstanz. The most exclusive hotel in the region is also an island in time. Built by Dominican friars, starting in 1236, the former monastery holds treasures from the history of art. It’s easy to get lost on your way to breakfast in the grand cloister, while admiring the profusion of dramatic alfrescos. Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin was born there in 1838. This should remind you of your appointment with the dream of the illustrious Count: to fly in a "dirigible".

A pouca distância do Inselhotel, no bairro Staad, está o cais das balsas que fazem a travessia para a cidade de Meersburg. Se você for bom de pedal, pode ir de bicicleta, senão, é melhor alugar um carro mesmo. No outro lado do lago, siga na estrada marginal por entre castelos e igrejas barrocas e através de bosques e vinhas molduradas pela água. Já nos arredores da cidade de Friedrichshafen, placas indicam o caminho até o hangar da Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei 2, a Companhia Alemã de Navegação de Zeppelin.

A short distance from the Inselhotel, in the Staad district, the ferries cross to the city of Meersburg. If you’re in good pedaling shape, take a bicycle. If not, rent a car. On the other side of the lake, follow the shoreline among the castles and baroque churches and through the p fwoods and vineyards. Entering the city of Friedrichshafen, signs indicate the hangar of the Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei 2, the German Zeppelin Navigation Company.

Ao se aproximar, o pouso da aeronave ainda se assemelha ao de um avião comum. Aí, de repente, o aparelho pára no ar e desce com precisão na vertical, tal qual um helicóptero. São as três hélices giratórias que possibilitam essa manobra espetacular, como ao mesmo tempo representam uma das muitas inovações tecnológicas que caracterizam a nova geração de Zeppelins.

The craft comes in for a landing like an airplane, then suddenly stops and drops vertically, like a helicopter. Three gyrating propellers make this maneuver possible, and they represent one of the many technological innovations that characterize the new generation of Zeppelins.
