Avant-propos

The Réseau international de néologie et de terminologie (Rint), known in English as the International Neology and Terminology Network, was established in 1986 under the language-planning program of the Francophone Summits to develop and diffuse language tools intended to facilitate the expression of scientific and technical modernity in French. As a founding member of Rint’s Canadian module, the Translation Bureau has helped to attain the objectives of the network by producing several specialized vocabularies of neologisms.

Le Réseau international de néologie et de terminologie (Rint) a été créé en 1986 dans le cadre du programme d’aménagement linguistique des Sommets francophones afin d’élaborer et de diffuser les outils langagiers facilitant l’expression de la modernité technoscientifique en français. En tant que membre fondateur du module canadien du Rint, le Bureau de la traduction a contribué à l’atteinte des objectifs du Réseau en produisant plusieurs vocabulaires spécialisés à caractère néologique.

In 1991, the Rint entrusted the Canadian module with the task of conducting two pilot projects aimed at developing vocabularies that would include both the definition of concepts and the illustration of terminological usage in specialized texts. In 1992, Terminology Update published an article entitled "La phraséologie - Nouvelle dimension de la recherche terminologique", which described the phraseological characteristics of languages for special purposes in relation to idioms in general language. Also included in the article was a progress report on specialized phraseology research being carried out by the Canadian module. In 1993, the first pilot project led to the publication of the Combinatory Vocabulary of CAD/CAM in Mechanical Engineering, the methodology of which was presented at the same time in volume 26, no. 2 of Terminology Update.

En 1991, le Rint confiait au module canadien la réalisation de deux projets-pilotes visant l’élaboration de vocabulaires qui, en plus de définir des concepts, renseignent sur l’emploi des termes dans les textes spécialisés. En 1992, la revue L’Actualité terminologique publiait un article intitulé « La phraséologie - Nouvelle dimension de la recherche terminologique » qui décrivait les particularités phraséologiques des langages spécialisés par rapport aux idiomatismes du langage courant. Cet article faisait aussi le bilan des recherches effectuées par le module canadien en matière de phraséologie spécialisée. En 1993, le premier projet-pilote aboutissait à la publication du Vocabulaire combinatoire de la CFAO mécanique dont la démarche méthodologique était présentée en même temps dans L’Actualité terminologique (vol. 26, n^o 2).
